The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Judiciary Exam is a prestigious examination conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) to recruit candidates for the position of Civil Judge (Junior Division) in the state’s judicial services. The exam aims to select qualified and competent individuals who can serve as judicial officers and administer justice effectively.

The UP Judiciary Exam follows a three-stage selection process:

    1. Preliminary Examination: The UP PCS J prelims exam is the first stage of the UPPCS Judiciary recruitment process. It comprises two papers: Paper I (General Knowledge – 150 marks) and Paper II (Law – 300 marks). Each paper has a duration of 2 hours and consists of Multiple Choice Questions. Clearing the prelims is essential to advance to the mains stage, which is descriptive in nature and holds significant weight in the selection process.

    • The total mark for the PCS J Prelims exam is 450.
    • There are 2 papers viz., General Knowledge & Law.
    • Each paper is 2 hours.
    • There is a negative marking of 0.33 mark in the UPPCS Judiciary prelims exam.

    Paper-II Law 300 2 Hours
    Total 150 450 4 Hours

    2. Main Examination: In order to qualify for the PCS Judiciary preliminary examination, candidates must meet certain criteria and are then selected to appear for the mains examination. The mains exam is a crucial stage as it determines the candidates’ overall merit for selection. The PCS J mains exam consists of 6 papers, each carrying a maximum of 1000 marks. Previously, before 2022, there used to be 5 papers, including a single language paper. All the papers in the mains exam are of descriptive nature, requiring candidates to provide written answers. Candidates have the option to answer the General Knowledge and Law papers in either Hindi or English.

    Paper Subject Marks Duration
    I. General Knowledge 200 3 Hours
II. English Language 100 3 Hours
III. Hindi Language 100 3 Hours

    3. Interview: Candidates who clear the Main Examination are called for a personal interview or viva voce. The interview aims to assess the candidates’ personality, communication skills, legal knowledge, and suitability for the role of a judicial officer.

The final selection is based on the cumulative performance of the candidates in the Main Examination and the interview.
