Cyclone Dana is a powerful cyclonic storm that formed in the Bay of Bengal in October 2024. It is expected to make landfall on the eastern coasts of India (primarily Odisha and West Bengal) and Bangladesh around October 24.
The cyclone has intensified due to a low-pressure system in the Bay, bringing wind speeds of 110–120 km/h.
Coastal areas like Khulna and Satkhira in Bangladesh and Midnapore and South 24 Parganas in West Bengal are expected to experience heavy winds, flooding, and storm surges of up to 8 feet.
Authorities have issued evacuation warnings in anticipation of the cyclone’s potential destruction, including damage to infrastructure, crops, and daily life in the affected regions.
In addition to Cyclone Dana, other recent cyclones include:
Cyclone Biparjoy (2023): This storm struck Gujarat, India, in June 2023, causing heavy rains, floods, and widespread damage to crops and infrastructure.
Deep Depression BOB 04 (2024): In September 2024, this depression formed in the Bay of Bengal, bringing heavy rains to Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, resulting in flooding and loss of life
