  • Greenwashing is the misleading practice wherein companies falsely portray their products as environmentally friendly or having a more positive environmental impact than they genuinely do. It involves making deceptive claims, obscuring environmentally damaging practices, or presenting vague assertions lacking scientific validation.

Tactics of Greenwashing:

  • This misleading practice occurs when companies emphasize certain sustainable features of their products while concealing or downplaying their overall environmental impact. For instance, a car manufacturer might tout a vehicle as eco-friendly due to its fuel efficiency without acknowledging the larger environmental ramifications of the manufacturing process.

ASCI’s Guidelines to Combat Greenwashing:

  • The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), established in 1985 as a voluntary self-regulatory body, has proposed stringent guidelines to tackle greenwashing in advertisements. ASCI, comprising members from various sectors of the advertising industry, aims to uphold advertising standards that are legal, honest, truthful, and not harmful to consumers’ interests.

ASCI’s Role and Code of Self-Regulation:

  • Operating as a non-profit organization, ASCI oversees complaints across diverse media platforms, including print, TV, radio, digital media, and promotional materials. It ensures adherence to its Code for Self-Regulation, focused on maintaining fairness in competition and safeguarding consumer interests. As a member of the International Council on Ad Self-Regulation (ICAS), ASCI contributes to global efforts in promoting ethical advertising practices.

  • Greenwashing persists as a concern in the advertising landscape, prompting regulatory bodies like ASCI to establish guidelines aimed at curbing deceptive environmental claims in advertisements.
