The Indian Flapshell Turtle (Lissemys punctata) is a species of freshwater turtle found in South Asia.
Characteristics:
- Appearance: The Indian Flapshell Turtle has a smooth, oval-shaped carapace (shell) that can vary in color from olive to brown. The underside (plastron) is usually pale yellow.
- Distinctive Features: One of the key features of this species is the presence of flaps of skin that cover the limbs when they are retracted into the shell, giving it the name “flapshell.” These flaps help in protection and camouflage.
- Size: Adults typically measure around 14-18 inches (35-45 cm) in length.
Habitat:
- Distribution: The species is widely distributed across the Indian subcontinent, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
- Environment: Indian Flapshell Turtles inhabit a variety of freshwater environments such as ponds, rivers, lakes, and marshes. They prefer slow-moving or stagnant water bodies with plenty of vegetation.
