• PVTGs represent a subset of tribal communities in India facing heightened vulnerability due to primitive traits, geographical isolation, low literacy, zero to negative population growth, and technological backwardness. Initially identified as Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs) in 1973, the category evolved into PVTGs in 2006, encompassing 75 tribes across 220 districts in 18 states and Union Territories.

• Demographic Distribution: The PVTG population stands at 2.8 million, residing in 22,544 villages.
• Regional Distribution: Odisha leads with 866,000 PVTG individuals, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh (including Telangana).
• Largest PVTG Community: The Saura community in Odisha boasts the highest PVTG population at 535,000, emphasizing the diverse nature of these groups.

PM-PVTG Development Mission: A Comprehensive Approach

• Launched with a budget of Rs 24,000 crore, the PM-PVTG Development Mission, unveiled on the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, marks a significant step towards empowering PVTGs.
• Mission Objective: The mission targets critical infrastructure development, encompassing power, water, road connectivity, housing, education, and healthcare in remote PVTG villages.
• Implementation Strategy: Coordinated efforts from nine ministries will execute 11 interventions, including the PM-Gram Sadak Yojana, PM-Gram Awaas Yojana, and Jal Jeevan Mission.
• Holistic Coverage: The mission extends its reach to vital schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna, Sickle Cell Disease Elimination, TB Elimination, immunization, PM Surakshit Matritva Yojana, PM Matru Vandana Yojana, PM Poshan, and PM Jan Dhan Yojana.
