Mashco Piro
In 2024, the Mashco Piro, an uncontacted tribe from Peru’s Amazon rainforest, emerged from isolation. The tribe left their isolated habitat due to encroachment and the search for food and safety. The Peruvian government established the Madre de Dios Territorial Reserve to protect the Mashco Piro’s territory, but large parts of their traditional lands are outside the reserve and have been sold for logging. The government has also forbidden contact with the Mashco Piro to prevent the spread of diseases.
Sami, Kven, and Forest Finn peoples
The Parliament of Norway formally apologized to the Sami, Kven, and Forest Finn peoples.
Māori, New Zealand:
The 1840 Treaty of Waitangi granted tribes rights to retain their lands and safeguard their interests under British governance. In 2024, a new bill seeks to extend similar protections to all New Zealanders.
Survival International is a non-profit organization that advocates for the rights of tribal peoples. You can sign up for their mailing list to learn more about tribal societies and the struggles they face.
