Embracing Winter Warmth: The Kangri Tradition in Kashmir

Kangri Commerce

Introduction:

  • As the icy grip of winter tightens its hold on the Kashmir valley, there is a notable surge in demand for the traditional fire pot known as “Kangri.” This age-old device, also referred to as Kanger or Kangid, plays a crucial role in keeping Kashmiris warm during the frosty winter months.

The Kangri: A Portable Heater:

  • The Kangri is an earthenware vessel filled with glowing embers, elegantly encased in handmade wicker baskets. Functioning as a portable and moving heater, it becomes an integral part of the attire, snugly tucked within the pheran—a long woollen cloak worn during winter. With a capacity to hold approximately 250 grams of charcoal, a Kangri can provide warmth for hours under the protective cover of a pheran, essential in combating temperatures that can plummet below minus 20 degrees.

Crafting the Kangri: A Laborious Process:

  • The outer shell of the Kangri is distinctive, crafted from willow wicker reeds abundant in the wetlands of north Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. These reeds, reaching up to eight feet in height, undergo a meticulous process during autumn, just before the surge in demand for these fire pots. The journey from harvesting to the final product involves scraping, peeling to remove bark, soaking, boiling, and drying. Once prepared, these reeds are expertly woven around a bowl-shaped clay pot.

Aesthetic Appeal:

  • The Kangri is not just a utilitarian device; it is a piece of art. The earthenware is adorned with vibrant threads, mirrorwork, and sequins, adding a touch of cultural aesthetics to its functionality. The final product measures about six inches (150 mm) in diameter, reflecting the artistry and craftsmanship of the Kashmiri people.

Conclusion:

  • In essence, the Kangri is more than a mere heating device; it is a symbol of tradition, resilience, and craftsmanship in the face of harsh winter conditions. As it experiences a resurgence in demand, this age-old tradition continues to weave warmth and cultural richness into the fabric of Kashmiri life.
