About BR Hills:

Biligiriranga Hills, commonly known as BR Hills, is a hill range situated in the southern part of Karnataka, India. It forms the border between the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats and is a biodiversity hotspot, rich in flora and fauna. The area is known for its scenic beauty, wildlife sanctuary, and cultural significance.

Key Highlights of BR Hills:

  1. Geography:
    • Location: BR Hills is located in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka, near the border with Tamil Nadu. It lies at an altitude of about 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) above sea level.
    • Climate: The region enjoys a moderate climate, with temperatures ranging between 15°C and 30°C. The area receives significant rainfall during the monsoon season.
  2. Biligiriranga Swamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary:
    • Wildlife: BR Hills is home to the Biligiriranga Swamy Temple (BRT) Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a protected reserve known for its diverse ecosystems. The sanctuary hosts a variety of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, leopards, gaurs, deer, and numerous bird species.
    • Flora: The sanctuary has a mix of deciduous and evergreen forests, with rich biodiversity including medicinal plants and unique species of flora.
  3. Cultural and Religious Significance:
    • Biligiriranga Swamy Temple: The hills are named after the ancient Biligiriranga Swamy Temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a form of Lord Vishnu. The temple is located atop the hill and is an important pilgrimage site for the local Soliga tribe and other devotees.
    • Soliga Tribe: The indigenous Soliga tribe, who inhabit the BR Hills, have a deep connection with the forest and its resources. They play a significant role in the conservation of the area.
  4. Tourism:
    • Activities: BR Hills is a popular destination for eco-tourism and adventure activities like trekking, bird watching, and wildlife safaris. The region offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, making it a favored spot for nature lovers.
    • Accessibility: The hills are accessible by road, with the nearest town being Chamarajanagar, about 50 kilometers away. The area is also close to major cities like Bangalore and Mysore.
  5. Conservation Efforts:
    • The BR Hills region has been the focus of various conservation efforts, aimed at preserving its unique biodiversity and supporting the livelihoods of the local communities. The area has been proposed to be declared as a Tiger Reserve due to its significance in the larger ecological network of the Western Ghats.
