BHASHINI Platform
Why in News ? In a significant development for Northeast India, Tripura has become the first state to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) for greater digital inclusion by implementing advanced text-to-speech technology as part of the BHASHINI initiative, according to recent government announcements.
About the BHASHINI Platform:
BHASHINI (BHASHa INterface for India) is an AI-powered language translation platform designed to overcome language barriers and facilitate communication between speakers of various Indian languages. The platform aims to improve internet accessibility and digital services in regional languages, featuring voice-based functionalities and promoting content creation in diverse Indian languages.
- Launched in July 2022 under the National Language Translation Mission (NLTM), BHASHINI aims to provide translation services in 22 scheduled Indian languages.
- The platform is designed to make Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools available to Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), startups, and individual innovators.
- BHASHINI is managed by the Digital India BHASHINI Division, a unit under the Digital India Corporation, which is a Section 8 company of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The platform is accessible via dedicated apps on Android and iOS, offering a user-friendly interface. It also features a special section called ‘Bhasadaan’, where individuals can participate in crowdsourcing initiatives to further enhance the platform’s capabilities.
