About Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari’ initiative:

  • The Prime Minister has launched the ‘Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari’ initiative to enhance rainwater harvesting and ensure long-term water sustainability.

    About:

    Under this program, approximately 24,800 rainwater harvesting structures are being constructed across the state to enhance rainwater harvesting and ensure long-term water sustainability.

    • The ‘Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari’ initiative seeks to conserve water with a strong emphasis on community partnership and ownership. 
    • It is driven by a whole-of-society and a whole-of-government approach. 
       Government Initiatives to Tackle Shortage of Water in India:

      Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA):

      • Launched: 2019
      • Aim: Focuses on water conservation and rainwater harvesting in water-stressed districts across India.
      • Key Activities: Promotes water conservation through watershed development, afforestation, rejuvenation of traditional water bodies, and water reuse.
      • Impact: Mobilizes communities to participate in water conservation activities, with a focus on vulnerable regions experiencing acute water shortages.

      2. Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABY):

      • Launched: 2020
      • Aim: Aims to improve groundwater management in critical areas across seven Indian states.
      • Funding: World Bank-supported initiative with a budget of ₹6,000 crore.
      • Key Features: Promotes community participation in groundwater management, sustainable farming practices, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of groundwater resources.
      • Focus Areas: Groundwater recharge, reduction of groundwater over-extraction, and water-saving techniques in agriculture.

      3. National Water Mission (NWM):

      • Launched: Part of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC)
      • Objective: Ensures integrated water resources development and management with a focus on reducing water wastage, improving water-use efficiency by 20%, and promoting equitable distribution.
      • Key Strategies: Encourages rainwater harvesting, optimizing irrigation, and improving water productivity through modern technologies and practices in agriculture and industry.

      4. Namami Gange Programme:

      • Launched: 2014
      • Objective: Aims to clean and rejuvenate the Ganga river by reducing pollution, improving sewage treatment infrastructure, and managing water resources in the Ganga basin.
      • Components: Riverfront development, biodiversity conservation, water conservation, afforestation, and public awareness campaigns.
      • Significance: Focuses not just on pollution control but also on ensuring sustainable water management in the river basin, which is crucial for water supply in North India.

      5. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY):

      • Launched: 2015
      • Objective: Aims to improve irrigation infrastructure and ensure efficient water use for agriculture.
      • Components:
        • Har Khet Ko Pani: Ensuring irrigation to every field.
        • More Crop Per Drop: Promoting micro-irrigation techniques like drip and sprinkler irrigation to conserve water.
      • Impact: Encourages water conservation in agriculture, which accounts for a significant portion of India’s water consumption.

      6. Catch the Rain Campaign:

      • Launched: 2021 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti
      • Objective: Focuses on rainwater harvesting and promoting water conservation techniques during the monsoon season.
      • Motto: “Catch the rain, where it falls, when it falls.”
      • Activities: Revival of traditional water bodies, promotion of rooftop rainwater harvesting, and development of water storage systems at local levels.

      7. National Aquifer Mapping and Management Program (NAQUIM):

      • Launched: 2012
      • Objective: Maps and manages aquifers across the country, ensuring scientific groundwater management and sustainable usage.
      • Key Aspects: Provides data on groundwater resources to help local authorities in planning and implementing water conservation and recharge efforts.

      8. Mission Amrit Sarovar:

      • Launched: 2022
      • Objective: Aims to develop and rejuvenate 75 water bodies in each district of the country as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
      • Impact: Promotes community participation in water conservation and ensures the development of sustainable water bodies for long-term water security.

      9. Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM):

      • Launched: 2019
      • Objective: Ensures access to safe and adequate drinking water to all households in rural India by 2024.
      • Key Features: Provides functional tap connections, focuses on water supply sustainability, water quality monitoring, and efficient water usage.
      • Impact: Reduces dependence on ground and surface water sources, and focuses on the equitable distribution of drinking water.

      10. Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase II:

      • Focus on Grey Water Management: The second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission emphasizes solid and liquid waste management in rural areas, particularly focusing on the treatment and reuse of greywater (non-sewage wastewater).
      • Integration with Jal Jeevan Mission: Ensures that water supplied through tap connections is used efficiently and wastewater is treated and reused for non-drinking purposes, promoting sustainable water usage.
