Agni-IV missile

The Agni-IV missile is part of India’s Agni series of ballistic missiles, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It plays a crucial role in India’s nuclear deterrence strategy. Here are the key features of the Agni-IV missile:

1. Range:

  • Operational Range: 3,500 to 4,000 kilometers. This medium-range ballistic missile extends India’s reach over significant parts of Asia, including deep into China.

2. Type and Capability:

  • Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM): Agni-IV is classified as an IRBM, designed for long-range targeting with high precision.
  • Nuclear Capable: It can carry a nuclear warhead, providing strategic deterrence against potential adversaries.

3. Warhead Capacity:

  • Payload: The missile can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kilograms.
  • Warhead Type: It is designed to carry both conventional and nuclear warheads.

4. Accuracy:

  • Highly Accurate: The missile is equipped with a Ring Laser Gyro-based Inertial Navigation System (RINS) and a sophisticated onboard computer for improved accuracy. This allows for a circular error probability (CEP) of less than 100 meters, making it highly accurate for a missile of its range.

5. Technology and Propulsion:

  • Two-Stage Solid Propellant: Agni-IV is powered by a two-stage solid propellant, which makes it more reliable and easier to handle than liquid-fueled missiles.
  • Composite Rocket Motor: The use of advanced composite materials in the rocket motor provides a higher thrust-to-weight ratio, enhancing performance.
  • Re-entry Heat Shield: The missile has an advanced re-entry heat shield that protects it from the extreme temperatures (up to 3,000°C) it encounters upon re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

6. Mobility and Launch Platforms:

  • Canisterized Missile: Agni-IV is a canister-based missile, allowing for quicker deployment and increased mobility. Canisterization also enhances the missile’s shelf life and safety.
  • Road Mobile: Its road mobility, enabled by transport vehicles, allows it to be launched from various terrains, ensuring strategic flexibility.

7. Strategic Importance:

  • Part of India’s Nuclear Triad: Agni-IV strengthens India’s second-strike capability, which is central to its nuclear doctrine of “No First Use”. The missile ensures that India can retaliate in case of a nuclear attack.
  • Deterrence: It serves as a powerful deterrent against regional threats, especially in the context of India’s security concerns with both China and Pakistan.

8. Testing and Induction:

  • Successful Tests: Agni-IV has undergone several successful test launches since its first test in 2010. Each test has demonstrated the missile’s reliability and operational readiness.
  • Induction: It is now a part of India’s Strategic Forces Command (SFC), which oversees the deployment and operational readiness of the country’s nuclear arsenal.
