Daily Current Affairs for PCS-J (Pre)-13 May 24 :Japan won Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey

In the final of the 30th Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy, Japan defeated Pakistan 4–1 in a penalty shootout to win their first Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Trophy.

  • Final was played on 11 May 2024 at the Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh city, Malaysia.
  • In the final, the match ended 2-2 after the expiry of the stipulated time. After that, Japan defeated Pakistan 4-1 in the decisive penalty shootout.

India and Azlan Shah Trophy:

  • The Sultan Azlan Shah is considered a prestigious hockey tournament in Asia that has attracted the world’s top men’s national hockey teams. The Indian team has been a regular participant in the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament.
  • Australia has won the Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy 10 times while India has won it 5 times (in 1985, 1991, 1995, 2009, 2010) and Pakistan has won it 3 times.
  • This time, the Indian team has not participated in the tournament. The Indian hockey team is focusing more on preparing for the 2024 Paris Olympics, starting on 26 July 2024.
Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy:

  •  The Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy is organized by the Malaysia Hockey Confederation and invites men’s hockey teams from six countries to play in it.
  • It began as a biennial competition in 1983 and was converted into an annual competition in 1999.
  • The trophy is named after the former Sultan of the state of Perak Malaysia, Sultan Azlan Shah.
  •  Sultan Azlan Shah was a pioneer of hockey in Asia. He was the President of the Asian Hockey Federation from 1990 until his death in 2014.
