Aurangzeb’s Birthplace and Historical Context: Separating Fact from Political Rhetoric

Introduction:

  • In a recent political discourse, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut likened Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, citing their common birthplace in Gujarat. However, beyond the political rhetoric, it’s essential to delve into historical records to ascertain the accuracy of such claims.

Aurangzeb’s Birth and Early Years:

  • Aurangzeb was indeed born in Dohad, present-day Gujarat, on November 3, 1618. He was the sixth child and third son of Prince Khurram, who later became Emperor Shah Jahan. Prince Khurram was appointed as the governor of Gujarat by his father, Emperor Jahangir, in 1618, leading Aurangzeb to spend his formative years in the province. However, his early life in Gujarat was interrupted by his father’s unsuccessful rebellion against Emperor Jahangir in 1622.

Historical Accounts and Aurangzeb’s Presence in Gujarat:

  • Historians present varying accounts regarding Aurangzeb’s stay in Gujarat. Some suggest that after Khurram’s rebellion, Aurangzeb and his brother Dara were sent to Emperor Jahangir’s court as hostages, while others argue that Khurram and Aurangzeb reconciled by 1625. Regardless, Aurangzeb’s formative years were intimately connected to Gujarat, lasting between four to eight years.

Gujarat in the Mughal Empire:

  • Gujarat came under Mughal rule in 1573 when Emperor Akbar defeated the Gujarat Sultanate. It became one of the empire’s pivotal provinces, with the British East India Company establishing a presence in Surat in 1612. During Aurangzeb’s reign (1657-1708), Gujarat witnessed instability, notably due to clashes with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Despite this, Mughal control persisted until Surat fell to the East India Company in 1759.

Conclusion:

  • While contemporary political discourse may draw parallels between Prime Minister Modi and Aurangzeb based on their birthplace, historical evidence confirms Aurangzeb’s early years in Gujarat. Understanding this historical context is crucial in separating fact from political rhetoric and comprehending the complexities of India’s rich past.
