Redevelopment Plans for Sabarmati Ashram: A Blend of Simplicity and Modernization
Introduction:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation stone and unveiled the masterplan for the Rs 1,200 crore Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Development Project in Ahmedabad. This initiative aims to rejuvenate the historic Sabarmati Ashram, originally established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917. The project seeks to strike a balance between preserving the ashram’s historical significance and introducing modern amenities.
Proposed Masterplan:
- The masterplan, crafted by HCP Design, Planning and Management Pvt Ltd, under the leadership of Bimal Patel, outlines the restoration, conservation, and rebuilding of nearly half of the original 63 structures within the 120-acre ashram premises. Notably, 36 buildings are earmarked for restoration, while 20 will undergo conservation efforts.
Expansion and Features:
- The current 5-acre Sabarmati Ashram will expand to cover 55 acres, with the entire precinct spanning 322 acres. The redevelopment will include an array of facilities such as an orientation center, scholars’ residency, exhibition areas, souvenir shops, and a cafeteria. The project also envisions the creation of a water harvesting pond and a grand entrance plaza.
Historical Significance:
- Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram holds paramount historical importance as the epicenter of his various movements for India’s independence. From the Dandi March to the Non-Cooperation movement, the ashram served as a hub for activism and peaceful resistance. The redevelopment aims to preserve this rich legacy while making it accessible to future generations.
Retaining Ethos and Simplicity:
- Amid concerns of potential commercialization, the redevelopment project emphasizes maintaining the simplicity cherished by Gandhi. The concept note underscores the importance of preserving the ashram’s original architectural integrity and ensuring free access for visitors and research scholars. Additionally, efforts will be made to utilize local materials and minimize environmental impact.
Conclusion:
- The redevelopment of Sabarmati Ashram symbolizes a harmonious blend of heritage preservation and modernization. As the project unfolds, it holds the promise of not only rejuvenating a historical landmark but also honoring Gandhi’s enduring legacy of simplicity and profound ideology.
