Prime Minister Modi Launches Ambitious Rooftop Solar Scheme: Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana

Introduction
• In a significant move to bolster India’s solar energy infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently unveiled the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana.’ This initiative aims to provide rooftop solar power systems to one crore households, fostering sustainable energy practices. This comes in the wake of the government’s previous efforts, such as the Rooftop Solar Programme launched in 2014, which had a target of achieving 40 GW by 2022.
Understanding the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana
• The newly introduced scheme focuses on installing solar power systems on residential rooftops, emphasizing self-sufficiency in energy generation. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the positive impact on reducing electricity bills for the poor and middle class, aligning with India’s broader goal of energy sector self-reliance.
Current Solar Capacity in India
• As of December 2023, India’s solar power installed capacity stands at an impressive 73.31 GW, with rooftop solar contributing around 11.08 GW. States like Rajasthan and Gujarat lead in total solar capacity, showcasing the nation’s commitment to renewable energy. Gujarat, in particular, tops the charts with 2.8 GW in rooftop solar capacity.
Importance of Solar Expansion for India
• Considering the International Energy Agency’s projection of India experiencing substantial energy demand growth, diversifying energy sources becomes imperative. With an ambitious target of reaching 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, expanding solar power capacity is crucial. India has significantly increased its solar capacity from less than 10 MW in 2010 to an impressive 70.10 GW in 2023.
Rooftop Solar Programme: A Recap
• Launched in 2014, the Rooftop Solar Programme focuses on increasing residential rooftop solar capacity by providing financial assistance and incentives to distribution companies (DISCOMs). With a goal to reach 40 GW by March 2026, the programme has already witnessed substantial growth, increasing rooftop solar from 1.8 GW in March 2019 to 10.4 GW in November 2023.
Conclusion
• In conclusion, the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana represents a renewed commitment to advancing solar energy in India. As the nation grapples with surging energy demands, these initiatives, coupled with the existing Rooftop Solar Programme, play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable and self-reliant energy solutions. Prime Minister Modi’s vision aims not only to address the immediate energy needs of households but also to contribute significantly to India’s long-term renewable energy goals.
