Exercise Mitra Shakti-2023: India-Sri Lanka joint military drill begins in  Pune

Introduction

  • “Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023,” the ninth edition of the joint military exercise between India and Sri Lanka, is underway from November 16th to 29th, 2023, at Aundh in Pune. This edition marks a significant milestone as it’s the first bilateral and bi-service exercise between the two countries, involving troops from the MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY Regiment, the Indian Air Force, and the Sri Lankan Air Force.

  • Participants: A contingent of 120 personnel from India, primarily comprising troops from the MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY Regiment, alongside representatives from the Indian and Sri Lankan Air Forces.
  • Exercise Focus: The primary objective is to rehearse sub-conventional operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, emphasizing joint responses during counter-terrorist operations.
  • Exercise Components: Activities encompass Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR), combat reflex shooting, Yoga sessions, and the use of advanced technologies such as Drones, Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems, and helicopters.
  • Drills and Rehearsals: The exercise involves practicing securing helipads, casualty evacuations, and collective efforts aimed at achieving higher interoperability among troops. The focus remains on safeguarding life and property while aligning with the UN’s interests during peacekeeping operations.
