Unveiling the Significance of Chhath Festival

Chhath Puja 2021: Healthy ways to observe the fast during four-day-long festival

Introduction

  • The Chhath Festival, deeply ingrained in Hindu Vedic traditions, is an illustrious celebration observed in the Indian Sub-Continent, particularly in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, select areas of Madhya Pradesh in India, and specific regions of Nepal. This four-day-long festival pays homage to the Sun God, Lord Surya, and Chhathi Maiya, an alternate name for Goddess Usha and a revered sister to Lord Surya.

Biannual Reverence

  • This grand festivity is commemorated twice a year, in the months of Chaitra (March-April) and Kartika (October-November), marking the changing seasons and the eternal cycle of nature.

The Rigors of Devotion: Rituals of Chhath Puja

  • Chhath Puja, hailed as one of the most eco-conscious religious festivals, extends over four days. The practices associated with this puja are believed to be more demanding compared to other Hindu festivals. They encompass rigorous fasting, wherein participants abstain from both food and water, immersing themselves in rivers or other water bodies, standing submerged while offering prayers, and turning towards the sun for an extended period. Additionally, offerings of ‘prasad’ are made to the Sun during the moments of sunrise and sunset.

Culinary Austerity: An Offering to the Divine

  • During Chhath Festival, any food prepared is devoid of salt, onion, or garlic, adhering to a strict dietary discipline that is an integral part of this spiritual observance.

Inclusivity in Devotion

  • In recent times, there has been a noticeable shift, with both men and women actively participating in the fasts associated with Chhath Festival. However, it is predominantly women who are hailed as the main worshippers. Those who observe the fast are reverently referred to as “parvaitin,” showcasing their unwavering devotion towards Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya.

Conclusion

  • Chhath Festival stands as a testimony to the profound traditions and steadfast devotion of its practitioners. With its distinctive rituals and eco-friendly ethos, it holds a special place in the hearts of those who partake in its observance. This festival not only venerates the Sun God but also symbolizes the harmonious coexistence of humanity with the natural world, making it a cherished celebration within the rich tapestry of Indian culture.
